Polyphenylene Sulfide PPS Plastic

PPS (Polyphenylene Sulfide) is a high-performance, crystalline thermoplastic engineering polymer with outstanding comprehensive properties:
Excellent heat resistance: Long-term service temperature can exceed 220°C, and short-term resistance can reach over 260°C. It has a high heat distortion temperature (HDT) and good flame retardancy, achieving UL94 V-0 rating.
Outstanding chemical resistance: Except for strong oxidizing acids (e.g., concentrated sulfuric acid, concentrated nitric acid), PPS resists most acids, bases, salts, organic solvents, and oils, and is virtually insoluble in any solvent below 200°C.
Good mechanical properties: High rigidity and hardness, with excellent creep resistance and fatigue resistance.
Exceptional dimensional stability: Extremely low molding shrinkage and near-zero water absorption, maintaining precise dimensions even in high-temperature, high-humidity environments.
Excellent electrical insulation: Low dielectric constant, low dielectric loss, and stable electrical performance under high frequency, high temperature, and high humidity conditions.
Inherent flame retardancy: Achieves high flame-retardant levels without adding flame retardants.
Intrinsic limitations: Pure PPS resin is relatively brittle, with low impact strength (especially notch impact) and poor toughness. Its color is usually dark brown or black, making it difficult to produce light-colored products. The low melt viscosity limits processability, but it has excellent wettability for reinforcement materials like glass fiber, so it is commonly used as reinforced or filled composites.

Major PPS Modification Directions
To overcome the limitations of pure PPS and expand its applications, modifications are mainly carried out through blending, filling, reinforcement, and alloying:
Reinforcement and filling modification:
Glass fiber reinforcement (GF): Most common, significantly improves tensile strength, flexural strength, rigidity, and heat distortion temperature.

Carbon fiber / mineral filling (CF / inorganic fillers): Carbon fiber significantly enhances strength, rigidity, wear resistance, and conductivity/antistatic performance. Fillers like calcium carbonate, talc, and titanium dioxide mainly reduce cost, improve dimensional stability, and enhance surface quality.

Toughening modification:
Blending with polyolefins (e.g., PP, PE), elastomers (e.g., SEBS, POE), nylons (PA), polysulfone (PSU), or adding elastomeric particles, greatly increases impact strength and toughness, overcoming brittleness.

Alloying modification:
PPS/PA alloy: Combines PPS heat and chemical resistance with PA toughness, improving processing flow for complex thin-walled parts.
PPS/PTFE alloy: Adding polytetrafluoroethylene greatly enhances wear resistance, self-lubrication, and corrosion resistance, suitable for wear-resistant sealing components.
PPS/PPO or PPS/PSU alloy: Further improves heat resistance, dimensional stability, and dielectric properties.

Functional modification:
Conductive / antistatic modification: Adding carbon fiber, carbon nanotubes, conductive carbon black, etc., to provide conductivity or antistatic properties.
Thermal conductivity modification: Adding boron nitride, alumina, and other fillers to enhance thermal conductivity.
Wear resistance modification: In addition to PTFE, solid lubricants like graphite or molybdenum disulfide can reduce the friction coefficient.

Processing and appearance modification:
Improve melt flow and molding process window.
Special treatments enable light coloration or dyeing to meet aesthetic requirements.

Applications of PPS and Its Modified Materials

Engine area: Ignition coil frames, sensor housings, injector components, throttle bodies, turbocharger intake pipes.
Electrical systems: Connectors, fuse boxes, relays, motor brush holders.
Body and chassis: Corrosion-resistant lamp sockets, bearing housings, pump housings, etc.

Electronics & Electrical (E&E):
Surface-mount technology (SMT): High-temperature reflow solder connectors, coil frames, IC carriers, switch components.

Home appliances: High-temperature contact components in irons, microwaves, heaters, with brackets and housings.
