3D Printing Materials Suppliers

3D printing materials are mainly divided by forming process into FDM filament, SLA photocurable resin, SLS selective laser sintering powder, MJF multi jet fusion powder, and certain metal printing materials, with performance, printing conditions, and suitable applications varying widely across categories.

FDM filament is the most common material for desktop machines, built up layer by layer through heated melt extrusion, with a low equipment barrier and simple operation. PLA is an entry-level filament — low printing temperature, minimal warping, smooth build quality, good surface finish, mild odor, sourced from bio-based raw materials, and low in cost. Its drawbacks are poor heat resistance (it starts deforming above about 50°C), insufficient toughness (prone to brittle fracture), and weak weather resistance (degrades outdoors). It's mostly used for hand models, decorative crafts, and appearance samples, and isn't suited to load-bearing or high-temperature use. Modified PLA versions — glass-fiber-filled, carbon-fiber-filled, high-toughness grades — improve rigidity and dimensional stability in the filled versions, though at the cost of reduced toughness and faster nozzle wear, and are suitable for simple tooling prototypes.

ABS is a classic engineering filament with excellent impact resistance, good toughness, solvent resistance, and better heat resistance than PLA; finished parts can be sanded and painted afterward. On the downside, it warps and shrinks easily during printing and gives off a fairly pungent smell, so an enclosed chamber is best. It's widely used for appliance housings, toys, and functional prototypes, and many consumer product prototypes are made in ABS. ASA behaves similarly to ABS, but its standout strength is UV/weathering resistance — it holds up outdoors without yellowing or cracking — while keeping good impact resistance. It also needs an enclosed chamber to cut down on warping, and works well for outdoor equipment housings, exterior fittings, and photovoltaic-related parts.

PETG strikes a balance between toughness, strength, and ease of printing — low warping risk, strong interlayer bonding, low odor, optional transparency, and resistance to oils and some chemicals. Standard PETG is fine for housings, appearance parts, and some food-contact samples. Modified PETG — glass-fiber, carbon-fiber, flame-retardant, UV-resistant, high-toughness grades — gains rigidity, dimensional stability, and creep resistance after filling, making it usable for fixtures and lightweight structural parts. Its drawbacks are moderate heat resistance, nozzle wear from filled grades, and a tendency to absorb moisture, so it needs drying before printing.

Nylon (PA) filaments — commonly PA6, PA12, PA66 — are extremely tough, wear-resistant, fatigue-resistant, chemically resistant, and mechanically strong on their own; carbon- or glass-fiber-reinforced versions push strength and stiffness even further, making them suitable for gears, bearings, and load-bearing structural parts. Nylon's biggest weakness is that it absorbs moisture very readily — printing with damp filament causes bubbling and weak interlayer bonding, and once a finished part absorbs moisture it swells dimensionally and loses strength. Most nylons should be printed in an enclosed chamber, drying beforehand is essential, and performance changes from moisture absorption need to be factored in for high-humidity use.

PPA, PEEK, and PEKK are high-performance, high-temperature FDM materials with very high heat deflection temperatures, good chemical and fatigue resistance, and suitability for demanding high-temperature, highly corrosive environments; PEEK also has good biocompatibility with medical applications. But printing temperatures are extremely high, requiring a high-temperature nozzle, heated bed, and a sealed high-temperature build chamber — equipment costs are steep and the material itself is expensive. These are mostly used in aerospace, medical implants, and high-end industrial functional parts.

TPU and TPE are flexible, elastic filaments with rubber-like rebound, and hardness varies enormously by grade, from a very soft, silicone-like feel to much stiffer elastomers. They resist tearing, bend well, and can be printed into shock absorbers, seals, foot pads, and protective covers. Printing them is fairly sensitive to retraction and extrusion speed settings, and they're prone to stringing or clogging.

SLA photocurable resin cures under UV light, giving high precision and strong detail with smooth surfaces, making it well suited to fine figurines, jewelry, and precision appearance prototypes. Resins come in many sub-types: general-purpose rigid resin has high hardness and suits appearance samples; tough resin has better impact resistance and is less prone to breaking, good for functional prototypes; high-temperature resin can withstand higher heat and is used for injection-mold samples; flexible resin mimics a rubber-like feel; casting resin leaves little ash after burnout and is used for lost-wax jewelry casting; biocompatible resin can be used for medical and dental samples. Photocurable resin needs proper post-curing, and the liquid material is irritating, so protective measures matter during handling.

SLS and MJF powder materials need no supports and can print complex hollow structures directly, mainly using nylon powder, glass/carbon-fiber-modified nylon powder, and flexible TPU powder. Finished parts have uniform mechanical properties without the clear layer-direction differences seen in FDM, making them suitable for batch functional prototypes, complex tooling, gears, and lightweight parts — though equipment costs are high and materials are on the pricier side.

Metal 3D printing materials are mainly metal powders, including stainless steel, aluminum alloys, titanium alloys, and high-temperature alloys; printed parts approach forged-part strength and are mostly used in aerospace, mold-making, and orthopedic implants, with both equipment and material costs running high.

Choosing among these materials mainly comes down to operating temperature, load requirements, whether the part will be used outdoors, and precision needs, while also matching what the equipment can handle. Some engineering filaments have hard requirements around drying, enclosed chambers, and wear-resistant nozzles, and most filled/modified materials wear down nozzles faster, so the right accessories are needed to print them reliably.
