PETG CF15 3D Printing Filament

PETG‑CF15 3D printing filament is an FDM engineering filament based on a PETG matrix filled with 15% chopped carbon fiber, with the vast majority of finished products being black. It's a carbon-fiber-reinforced filament with well-balanced overall performance and relatively friendly printability. Compared to pure PETG, the addition of chopped carbon fiber substantially increases the material's rigidity and flexural modulus, reduces shrinkage during forming, and clearly improves dimensional stability, while material density drops slightly — allowing parts to achieve higher strength while staying relatively light. The material absorbs less moisture than carbon-fiber nylon filaments, but it's still hygroscopic; if it absorbs moisture, printing will result in bubbling, poor interlayer bonding, and pitted surfaces. It must be dried before formal printing — generally recommended at 60–70°C for 6–12 hours — and should be stored sealed after drying whenever possible.

Mechanically, PETG‑CF15 is far more rigid than standard PETG, with improved creep resistance, so it resists deformation under sustained load. However, elongation at break drops, making it overall more brittle than pure PETG, with weaker impact resistance than the base material — it isn't suited to parts that need repeated flexing or that take heavy impacts. Its heat deflection temperature is roughly 70–75°C, with a continuous-use temperature close to 80°C — a moderate level of heat resistance, not as high as high-temperature carbon-fiber materials like PA‑CF or PPA‑CF, making it suitable for structural parts in low-to-moderate temperature conditions. In terms of chemical resistance, its tolerance for weak acids and bases is limited, and prolonged contact with strong acidic/alkaline solvents isn't recommended; it has some outdoor weathering resistance, and compared to carbon-fiber nylon parts, its performance degrades less in humid conditions.

For printing, carbon fiber is abrasive — a standard brass nozzle will wear out quickly, so a hardened steel, stainless steel, or tungsten-carbide wear-resistant nozzle is required. A 0.6mm nozzle diameter is preferred; prolonged use of 0.4mm or smaller nozzles should be avoided to reduce clogging and excessive wear. The extrusion temperature range is mostly 230–250°C, with a bed temperature of 60–80°C. The print surface can use a PEI sheet or tempered glass, giving good first-layer adhesion, with overall warping risk very low — an enclosed chamber isn't strictly required, and standard desktop FDM machines can handle printing it, though an enclosed chamber can further improve interlayer bonding. Fan speed shouldn't be set too high, to ensure sufficient fusion between layers; retraction settings need some adjustment compared to standard PETG to reduce stringing and nozzle oozing. Finished prints have a matte, carbon-fiber texture on the surface that somewhat masks layer lines — the surface finish is better than many other carbon-fiber filaments, though it can't match the glossy, translucent look of pure PETG.

In practical applications, PETG‑CF15 is widely used for tooling and jigs, inspection fixtures, equipment brackets, lightweight structural parts for drones, mechanical housings, automotive component prototypes, and functional parts used in high-humidity environments — a highly cost-effective choice for load-bearing structural parts on desktop equipment (BCN3D Tech...). Its shortcomings are also fairly clear: reduced toughness, weaker impact resistance, and limited heat resistance, making it unsuitable for high-temperature conditions or parts subject to frequent impact. The filament also needs proper moisture protection during storage, and the nozzle should be checked regularly for wear to avoid dimensional inaccuracies in prints.
